Africa Overland – The 8 Best African Countries to Explore in Your Expedition Vehicle

Overlanding is all about taking your expedition truck to remote places in order to become one with nature. And no place on this planet personifies nature more than Africa. But which are the 5 best African countries to explore in your expedition vehicle?

Most African countries have a lot to offer when it comes to expeditions. These are not exactly known for their tarmac. Instead, they have received the gift of natural beauty, which includes all sorts of terrains with unique animals. You’ll also enjoy the climate over there quite a bit.

The following are the top 8 African countries to explore in your expedition vehicle, and a bonus one:

1.     Botswana

We begin with a Southern African country made of the desert (Kalahari) and salt pans (Makgadikgadi). It also features a lot of great wildlife; hence it boasts some huge national parks. Another one of its highlights is the beautiful Okavango delta. Watch Top Gear’s Botswana special for more information.

2.     Kenya

Kenya is one of the most developed countries in Africa but more importantly, it is home to a lot of the continent’s signature wildlife. The country has several nature reserves and it also features many lakes. Kenya also has many highlands including the famous Mount Kilimanjaro.

3.     Namibia

If you really want to test your expedition vehicle in the desert, then Namibia is the place to go. Sure, it has the diverse wildlife that Africa is proud of, and it features several great conservation centers. But its desert is its highlight. You can go dune bashing or you can even hike on its arduous Fish River Canyon.

4.     South Africa

This country is one of the finest in the African continent for a number of reasons. A major one is because of how diverse it is in terms of its geography and wildlife. South Africa has all sorts of terrains on it and it has some of the world’s best wildlife conservation parks in it.

5.     Uganda

Uganda is particularly famous for its rainforests which are home to all sorts of wildlife and fauna. The country is home to many sanctuaries that protect endangered animals. Apart from its national parks, the country also has areas with volcanic activities which provide their own thrill.

6.     Zimbabwe

This is a country that’s a tourist destination for its highlands and rivers. However, one of its rivers tends to excite tourists the most, and that’s the Zambezi River. This is because one of the world’s most popular waterfalls, the Victoria Falls, is a part of it.

7.     Guinea

Guinea is home to several different regions, with each of them sporting their own sets of terrains. One particularly attractive overlanding destination is the Fouta Djallon, which some say is the country’s biggest highlight. This is a beautiful area with canyons, grasslands, valleys and mountainous terrains.

8.     Senegal

Senegal is a cool country (literally and figuratively) and it offers you a desert and wetland terrain. The former lets you get wild with your camper while the latter allows you to experience unique forms of wildlife (especially birds). The country also has a lot of heritage and old buildings that you’ll love.

Bonus Country: Malawi

This is a relatively undeveloped region as compared to the other ones on this list. However, this will just make your overlanding experience more fun. It is a tiny country and around 33% of it is the Lake Malawi National Park, its largest conservation park. There are also plenty of other such sanctuaries over there.
