Custom Built Motorhomes – What You Need to Know

Looking to buy one of the many custom-built campers on the market? Motorhomes may just be the best thing. These are spacious, full of amenities, and purpose-built for overlanding and camping. There are plenty of custom-built motorhomes available today. All the biggest coachbuilders in the world offer their own line of custom motorhomes and RVs.

The following tells you all about them:

Can you design your own motorhome?

You sure can. Just head on to a dealer or even better, a website of a custom-built RV manufacturer. These offer it all from custom floor plans and vehicle dimensions to a whole plethora of amenities and storage options.

Types of custom-built motorhomes

The following are the types of motorhomes sold by coachbuilders:

Custom-built Class B motorhomes

You may know these as campervans. A custom-built Class B RV is usually manufactured with a commercial van as the baseline vehicle. Some of the best options in this range are mentioned here in the list of best camper vans. Top companies include Winnebago, Airstream and Loef.

Custom-built Class C motorhomes

Then you have custom-built Class C RVs which are bigger than the aforementioned vans. These are usually built on top of a truck with the cab cut-out design (such as a Ford F650). Some popular brands include the mighty GXV and Earthroamer.

Custom-built Class A motorhomes

Then you have the biggest and the baddest motorhomes on the planet; these are usually purpose-built to provide you with the best experience from the bottom up. The Ford F-53 is a truck that’s specifically catered to this application. Thor and Jayco are some of the top brands.

Is it cheaper to build your own motorhome?

Yes, of course. You can easily find a self-built motorhome for sale if you look online. And the reason why people go this route and don’t really have a motorhome done by pros is the cost. Let’s also not forget the insane delivery times these companies quote that last for months.

When you custom build your RV, if you have the DIY experience, you can save thousands on labor costs. Furthermore, you can build it exactly the way you want to. But, what if you don’t have the knowhow?

Well, you can always buy a cheaper custom-built motorhome and add the niceties yourself. Just tell the coachbuilders to add the essentials to the vehicle. Do the rest yourself and you’ll see that it is a rewarding experience.

How much does a custom motorhome cost?

Let’s face it, custom built motorhomes are pricey and can cost you quite a bit of dough. As mentioned in our piece on custom-built RVs, these things can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if you opt for a premium one. The cheapest one should set you back at least $50k.

These things are only going to get pricier unfortunately. Most experts say it is due to disruptions in the supply chain and the shortage of skilled workers. It is also due to the increasing number of technologies in these vehicles.

Is buying an old motorhome worth it?

If it has been maintained well, then yes. You can save a lot of money and you’ll also have all the essentials that are quite pricey on the custom-made campers of today. The only thing that you need to take care of is maintenance and keeping it clean. Make sure that you inspect the vehicle well before making the purchase.
