Off-Road Vehicle Recovery: How to Do it on an Overlanding Expedition

Overlanding can be an exciting and adventurous activity, but it also comes with risks. One of the most common challenges overlanders face is getting stuck or stranded. When this happens, it's essential to know how to recover your vehicle safely and effectively.

Got a 2WD truck stuck in the mud? A pickup truck stuck in the snow? An SUV stuck in the sand? Fret not, let's get you out of this.

In this blog, we'll briefly go over the basics of off-road vehicle recovery in various terrains:

Assess the Situation

Before attempting any recovery, you should assess the situation and determine the best course of action. You must know what caused the vehicle to get stuck and the terrain that you are dealing with. Look for anything hazardous around you, especially if there’s a chance of rollover.

Use the Right Equipment

Off-road vehicle recovery requires the right equipment. Some of the basic equipment you should have in your recovery kit includes recovery straps/ropes, a winch, D-Shackles, a shovel, a tire deflator, and jack and jack stands.

A chainsaw can prove handy in dealing with dense vegetation. However, you need to make sure your equipment is in good condition and that you know how to use it properly. Choose the Right Off-Road Recovery Technique

Now that you’ve identified the level of hot water you’re in, there are different recovery techniques you can use. Here are some of the most common:

Self-recovery

If the vehicle is only partially stuck, you can try to get it out by using a shovel to clear the path, reducing tire pressure, or rocking the vehicle back and forth. Maxtrax can also come in handy as they provide some added friction.

Winch recovery

A winch is a machine that uses a cable to pull the vehicle out of a difficult spot. It's essential to anchor the winch properly to a sturdy object. Simply activate it and let the magic happen. Do ensure that it’s in working condition though.

Tow recovery

This is the best-case scenario here. If you have another vehicle nearby, you can use it to tow the stuck vehicle out. It's crucial to use a recovery strap/rope to connect the vehicles securely. If you have cellphone reception, you can reach out to professional towing services nearby.

Hi-Lift Jack

This is a specialized jack that can be used to lift the vehicle out of a difficult spot. You'll need to attach the jack to a stable point on the vehicle and lift it carefully. There are several types of jacks that one can use – the important thing is knowing how to use them

3 Off-Road Recovery Tips for Safety

Off-road vehicle recovery can be dangerous, so safety should be your top priority. Here are three safety tips to keep in mind:

Wear proper protective gear

Some may consider this to be an overstretch, but anything can happen while on the trail. This is why it is recommended to wear gloves. Eye protection also applies in several cases.

Keep bystanders at a safe distance

Standing near the vehicle is never recommended unless you absolutely have to. This is especially true if you have an SUV stuck in the mud. Don't stand in the line of the recovery strap or rope either. Momentum is dangerous and there’s a good chance your vehicle could be out of control the moment it gets unstuck.

Use recovery equipment properly

Devices have instructions on them and you need to follow them. There are methods that you must use and numbers that you must not exceed. If you don’t use the machine right, it will break. You'll have a lot more trouble taking care of that stuck vehicle then.
