Want A Toyota Hilux Expedition Vehicle? Here’s All the Basic Toyota Hilux Info That You Need

The Toyota Hilux is one of the very best options in the midsize pickup truck category. It is known for having it all; from dependability and efficiency to great offroading prowess and durability. The Hilux expedition vehicle is therefore one of the finest overland pickups.

When buying a used Hilux, you’ll come across a plethora of specifications as there are many models on the market. However, there are some specs that are commonplace among all of them. Other than that, there are those which are maxed out in the current model.

Getting a Hilux? The following is all that you need to know about it, with a special focus on the 7th and 8th gen models:

Powertrain

We begin with the powerplant underneath the Hilux; aka the huge collection of bits that makes it move.

Engine

You can find countless engine options when you search for a used Hilux. You’ll find 4- and 6-cylinder engines, which can be powered by gasoline/petrol, or diesel. Look around and you’ll find that all of the Hilux trucks feature engine displacements in the 2- to 4-liter range.

Transmission

The gearbox of the Hilux can be found in manual and automatic versions. You can find these transmissions with 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-speed options. If you’re going for a Hilux overland pickup, then the manual will be preferred. 2WD and 4WD are offered, out of which the latter is the better choice.

Payload

Hilux models from the past 2-3 decades should be able to carry a maximum payload of more than 1000 kg or almost 2200 lbs., depending on how well they are equipped.

Towing

As expected, the max hauling capacity of the Hilux is found in the currently offered model – the 8th gen. The range for this braked towing capacity lies between 2500 (5500 lbs.) and 3500 kg (3500 lbs.). This is quite the step up from the model prior to this, which offered about 1000 kg less.

Body

The Hilux is offered in a number of different body configurations, which is partly why it is such a well-regarded workhorse.

Dimensions

The Toyota Hilux has gotten bigger with time. If we talk about length and height, then the current/8th gen Hilux is the longest and tallest at 5.345 and 1.815 meters respectively. It is also the widest model with a maximum width of 1.935 meters. After this, the 7th gen Hilux has the biggest dimensions.

Weight

As far as the heaviest Hilux model is concerned, the 7th generation takes the cake with its maximum curb weight of 2460 kg. The 8th generation comes second in this case despite offering the greatest number of features and being the largest of the Hilux models.

Bed Size

The current and the outgoing generations of the Hilux have the longest maximum bed size at 2.315 meters if you pick the single cab option. However, you can expect to lose around 0.8 meters if you pick the double cabin, which you probably will like most of your fellow overlanders.

Efficiency

The Hilux is a truck that has always been known for its fuel efficiency. If you look at the Hilux model years, you’ll find that the average mpg ratings according to its consumers are around the 20-mpg range. The more recent models are even known to do up to 23 mpg, provided that you get the right engine.

The aforementioned specs should give you quite the idea of what you can expect from a Hilux. If you’re interested in buying one, do check out our Toyota Hilux buying guide.
